HIPS is high impact resistant polystyrene. In order to meet the requirements of ductile materials, rubber modified polystyrene (high impact resistant polystyrene, or HIPS) began to be developed in 1950. By adding rubber to polystyrene substrate, various grades of high impact polystyrene with different properties can be produced. In recent years, various special grades of HIPS have been developed, including flame retardancy, stress cracking resistance, high gloss, very high impact strength, glass fiber reinforcement and low residual volatilizing. They can now compete with expensive engineering resins in many applications. The outstanding properties of impact resistant polystyrene are easy to process, excellent dimensional stability, high impact strength and high rigidity. For HIPS only in heat resistance. Oxygen permeability, uv stability and oil resistance are limited. Chemistry and properties Impact resistant polystyrene is produced by dissolving polydiene rubber in styrene monomer prior to the polymerization reaction. Although suspension polymerization method can be used to produce HIPS, the main method used in industrial HIPS is bulk polymerization. In bulk polymerization, the styrene monomer/rubber/additive mixture passes through a series of reactors with a conversion rate of 70 to 90%.
