PET Lamination PE

PET Lamination PE

In thermoforming packaging, PET Lamination PE usually includes two fundamentally different solutions: 1. PET Sheet with PE Protective Film (Peelable);2. PET + PE Laminated Structure (Functional Lamination / Co-extrusion)

0.18–1.7mm Thickness Range
PE Layer Type Peelable film or permanent sealing layer
Sealing Compatibility PE lidding film (PET+PE only)
Processing Method Adhesive-free thermal lamination

In food and medical thermoforming markets, the term “PET Lamination PE” is often used broadly. In actual production and export practice, it refers to two fundamentally different material structures, each serving a distinct purpose. Misunderstanding these structures frequently leads to incorrect material selection.

At PULIXIN, we clarify this distinction upfront with customers to ensure the sheet performs correctly after forming, sealing, storage, and distribution — not just during initial trials.

Structure 1: PET + PE Protective Film (Peelable Protection Layer)

Concept

This structure consists of a standard APET or PETG sheet with a thin PE protective film applied to one or both sides. The PE layer is not intended for sealing or bonding; its sole function is surface protection.

Key Advantages

  • Prevents scratches during slitting, stacking, and transport
  • Peel-off design — removed before thermoforming or printing
  • Maintains optical clarity of the PET surface
  • Reduces dust and static contamination during handling

Typical Applications

  • Cosmetic blister packaging
  • Medical device trays (non-sealing)
  • High-gloss display packaging
  • Export shipments with long transport cycles

Recycling & Sustainability

The PE film is removed prior to forming. PET recycling streams remain unaffected as long as the film is separated correctly. This structure is considered a temporary protection solution, not a functional laminate.

Structure 2: PET + PE Laminated Layer / Co-extruded Structure

Concept

In this structure, PE is permanently laminated or co-extruded with PET, forming a functional multi-layer sheet. The PE layer actively participates in heat sealing, barrier performance, and tactile properties.

Key Advantages

  • Excellent heat-seal compatibility with PE lidding films
  • Stable peel strength after thermoforming
  • Improved moisture resistance compared to mono PET
  • Optional EVOH layer for extended shelf-life applications
  • No adhesive lamination — cleaner, more consistent structure

Typical Applications

  • Ready-to-eat meal trays
  • Cooked meat and ham packaging
  • Modified atmosphere food packaging
  • Medical and pharmaceutical thermoformed trays

Recycling & Sustainability

As PET and PE belong to different polymer families, recycling depends on layer thickness ratio and local recycling infrastructure. In most export markets, these structures are used where functional performance outweighs mono-material requirements.

Structural Comparison

Feature PET + PE Protective Film PET + PE Laminated Layer
PE Function Temporary surface protection Permanent functional layer
Heat Sealing Not applicable Fully compatible
Peel Behavior Manual peel-off before forming Controlled peel strength after sealing
Recyclability High (after film removal) Application-dependent

How to Choose the Right Structure?

From real customer discussions, the decision usually depends on one key question:

Do you need sealing performance or just surface protection?
  • From real customer discussions, the decision usually depends on one key question:
  • If appearance & scratch resistance matter → PE Protective Film

Choosing the wrong structure often leads to:

  • Sealing failure
  • Unexpected recycling issues
  • Increased scrap rates during forming
