High impact polystyrene (HIPS), do you know? High-impact polystyrene is modified polystyrene. Because PS is brittle, it needs to be modified with a polymer with high elasticity to improve toughness.
Commonly used cis-polybutadiene is grafted onto the polystyrene chain to improve the toughness of the material. The rubber content is very low, generally about 3% to 5%; some are grafted with ethylene-propylene rubber, which can simultaneously improve outdoor aging resistance performance. The grafting method can dissolve the rubber component in styrene to form a rubber-rich phase and a styrene-rich phase. In the polymerization process of styrene, styrene free radicals are grafted with the rubber.
